Background and Education:

Raised on a dairy farm in northeastern Wisconsin, Zimmer’s approach to agriculture is rooted in a deep understanding of animal and soil nutrition. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master's in dairy nutrition from the University of Hawaii. His early career included teaching farm management, where he began connecting the dots between soil mineralization, crop quality, and livestock health.
 

Professional Achievements:
Midwestern BioAg - In 1983, Zimmer co-founded this company with a focus on helping farmers transition to biological systems through education and mineral-balanced fertilizers. The company now works with thousands of farms globally.
Otter Creek Organic Farm - He operates this 1,500-acre family farm in Lone Rock, Wisconsin. The farm serves as a "living laboratory" where he tests biological farming methods, including high-diversity cover cropping and rotational grazing.

Gary is the author of three seminal books: The Biological Farmer (widely considered the "bible" of the movement), Advancing Biological Farming and The Zimmer Management Method
 

Educational Philosophy:

Zimmer’s teaching focuses on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. He famously compares the "rumen" of a cow to the "biology" of the soil, arguing that just as a cow needs a balanced diet to produce milk, soil needs a balanced mineral profile and active microbial life to produce nutrient-dense crops.
